LGBT+ History Month

February 2022

February is LGBT+ History Month, a month where Woodsiders promote, celebrate, and encourage social justice and equality. If you have visited us before, you may have seen our rainbow crossing directly outside our gates. This historic feature is a permanent symbol of our commitment to equality and challenging hate in all its forms. This year, our award-winning Equalities Group have mapped out various activities such as form time activities, assemblies to inform their peers on this pressing issue whilst staff members have integrated it into their subjects where possible. Here are some LGBTQ+ facts and figures (Stonewall):
  • More than a third of LGBT staff (35%) have hidden that they are LGBT at work for fear of discrimination.
  • Two-thirds (64%) of LGBTQ+ people had experienced anti-LGBT+ violence or abuse.
  • 42% of LGBT+ school pupils have been bullied in the past year, double the number of non-LGBT+ pupils (21%).
It is important that our young people are aware of the discrimination and fear which members of the LGBTQ+ community has suffered in the past, as well as what is still happening today, so they can actively promote equality and support those in need.

We will be sharing all our activities on our social media channels, stay tuned.
